Frequently Asked Questions

How is Pilates with Teresa different from other Pilates studios?
If you are looking for a small, safe and encouraging environment with master level expertise, then this is the right place for you. Teresa integrates her extensive physical therapy, Pilates, and dance background to give you a movement experience that is eye opening and rewarding. You’ll be provided with a custom home exercise program and will have at your disposal the latest in Pilates equipment as well as use of a Far Infra Red Sauna.

What should I expect in my first session at Pilates with Teresa?
Your first session is comprised of an evaluation of strength, flexibility, posture and medical history assessment along with an introduction to the core principles and exercises of the Pilates system. The information gathered from the initial session will help to determine your individual goals. As both a certified Pilates instructor and licensed Physical Therapist, my approach is exercise oriented with a strong anatomical/rehabilitation emphasis when needed.

In addition to the standard Pilates equipment such as the Reformer, Trapeze Table and Spine Corrector and Combo Chair, I also utilize physioballs, foam rollers, rotating discs and therabands. When deemed appropriate, I also incorporate manual Physical Therapy techniques.

Do you specialize in particular populations?
I’ve taken specialty training to work with prenatal/postnatal women. In addition, with my background in professional dance and love of ice skating, I have much to offer performing artists and skaters. My background as a Physical Therapist is in outpatient orthopedics, therefore I’m also well equipped to work with those requiring a more rehabilitative approach.

Will I be sore after my session?
Pilates does not fatigue the muscles to exhaustion, rather it uses movement patterns, mental focus and muscle memory to build strength and awareness into the body. Pilates leaves you energized and while you may experience some soreness as your body experiences changes, you will not experience debilitating soreness.

When can I expect results to be seen or felt?
Results are individual and dependent on one's level of commitment. Generally though my clients report feeling benefits within 1 session and seeing results within 10 sessions.

What makes Pilates different from other exercise forms?
The equipment designed by Joseph Pilates - exercising on it is unlike anything else I’ve experienced. With most exercise equipment I feel like I’m pushing pieces of padded metal around. With Pilates I’m moving, stretching, folding, lengthening …and I happen to be moving the apparatus with me!

How many sessions a week should I take?
2-3x per week is optimal. Since that is not practical for many people, some of my clients take 1 private and 1 semiprivate a week while others take 1 private per week.

How do your clients address keeping fit for those who come to you only 1x/week?
I encourage autonomy and give my clients mat exercises they can do at home to continue to address their goals. The more diligent they are with the exercises, the greater the results.

What should I wear to my session?
Comfortable clothing that will allow you to move freely.

Since you are a physical therapist can I see you under my insurance plan?
I am currently not dealing with insurance plans. Some of my clients have flexible spending accounts through their jobs. I can provide a detailed invoice and my professional license number so you can submit your sessions toward your flex spending account.

"With the urging of my orthopedist,
I began private classes with Teresa.
